Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. At the age of five the carnival barker father died which left Ruth's mother no option but to be a cleaning girl and waitress to support her family. Ruth grew up in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. She quit school in just two short years to pursue acting. It was not without problems. When she was offered a job in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to get jobs in the stage. After a brief stint as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home and quit her position. She worked as an usherette in the mornings and was a part of the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. She studied drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
